FORT STEWART/HUNTER AAF REAR DETACHMENT COMMAND ADOPT A UNIT PROGRAM
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES (SOP) 

1. PURPOSE:  To establish guidelines and procedures for the Adopt a Unit Program. 

2. SCOPE AND MISSION:  This SOP addresses the role Rear Detachment plays in the Adopt a Unit Program.  This SOP applies to all units and staff assigned to 3ID and all organizations, churches, businesses and citizens wishing to participate in this program. 

3. GENERAL:  The Adopt a Unit Program is designed to provide the surrounding community an opportunity to get involved and show their support to soldiers. 

4. CRITERIA:  Community Members/Businesses wishing to adopt a Unit must abide by the following criteria:

a.       Adopt a Unit size element or larger
     i.    Company = + 125 soldiers
     ii     Battalion = + 750 soldiers

b.      Make contact with Adopted Unit POC on a monthly basis.

c.       Abide by established mailing restrictions. 

5. PROCEDURES:  

a.       Community Members/Businesses wanting to adopt a Unit must contact (1) Bess Stone, Fort Stewart adopt-a-unit coordinator, at 912-767-5058 or bess.stone@stewart.army.mil.

b.      Once coordination with a unit representative has been established, Community Members/Businesses will be notified in writing of their designated Unit as well as receiving the most current mail restrictions posted by DOIM.  For privacy reasons, individual soldier’s information will not be distributed.  All correspondence will be routed through a designated unit representative. 

6. RESPONSIBILITIES OF REAR DETACHMENT REPRESENTATIVES: 

a.       Upon request by Community Members/Businesses/churches/citizens, the Rear Detachment Representatives will look at a matrix to see which units have not yet been adopted.  The Rear Detachment Representatives will then link the Community Members/Business to the unit POC for the unit being adopted. 

b.      The Rear Detachment Representatives will inform Community Members/Businesses, in writing, of the postal regulations and restrictions and provide a list of suggested items to send. 

c.       The Rear Detachment Representatives will maintain communications with Community Members/Businesses to ensure the program is working. 

7. RESPONSIBILITIES OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS/BUSINESS’: 

a.       If requesting to adopt a unit, contact one of the three 3ID Adopt a Unit POCs. 

b.      Correspond with assigned unit on at least a monthly basis. 

c.       Suggested items that would be needed are phone cards, playing cards and toiletries.  However, if a school would like to adopt a unit, hand drawn pictures, cards and letters would be very much appreciated. 

d.      Abide by the following Postal Guidelines: 

i.                     Do not mail any parcel exceeding 72” length and girth combined or any parcels exceeding 48” in length.

ii.                   Do not mail any item that exceeds 70lbs.

iii.                  Do not mail any matter containing religious material contrary to Islamic faith. This refers to material that speaks out negatively against Islam and material sent in bulk in an effort to convert or evangelize.  It is acceptable to send a Bible or religious tapes or books to a soldier.

iv.                 Any matter depicting nude or semi-nude persons, pornographic or sexual items.

v.                   Any matter containing non-authorized political material.  This refers to material that could be used to impose our political view on the host country.  It does not prohibit mailing a US Flag or a picture containing a flag to a soldier.

vi.                 Firearms

vii.                Pork or pork by-products.

viii.              Alcoholic beverages and material used in the production of alcoholic beverages.

ix.                 Securities, currency or precious metal in their raw, un-manufactured state.

x.                   Obscene articles, prints, paintings, cards, films, videotapes, etc., and horror comics and matrices. 

e.       The Rear Detachment Representatives encourage the Community Members/Businesses to mail the packages to their adopted unit.  In some cases, the Rear Detachment Representatives may be able to help find ways to send the packages. 

f.        Maintain correspondence with the Rear Detachment Representatives. 

g.       Report all issues to one of the Division POCs. 

8. DONATIONS: Community Members/Businesses wishing to donate tangible goods need to contact the Rear Detachment Representatives listed on page 1, section 5a.  Any Community Members/Businesses wanting to make monetary donations needs to contact Beverly Childs, DMWR, 767-5133.
